Title: How to better describe this substance.
Post by: fredsmith on April 08, 2016, 12:53:36 PM
I need to reference this substance in addressing an audience that (like myself) might have only a modest knowledge of organic chemistry:
Stenfilcon A [USAN]
Molecular Formula:
(C23-H54-O7-Si5)t.(C16-H28-O4-Si-(C5-H12-O2-Si-(C2-H4-O)p)m-(C2-H6-O-Si)n)s.(C10-H18-O4)z.(C10-H14-O4)w.(C7-H12-O3)x.(C5-H9-N-O)v.(C5-H8-O2)y

aka
3,3'-((alpha-(alpha-(dimethylsilylene)poly(oxy((3-(omega-methoxypoly(oxyethylene))propyl) methylsilylene))) poly(oxy(dimethylsilylene))) dipropyl bis(2-methylprop-2-enoate) polymer with 2-(3-(9-butyl-1,1,3,3,5,5,7,7,9,9-decamethylpentasiloxan-1-yl)propoxy)ethyl 2-methylprop-2-enoate, N-ethenyl-N-methylacetamide, ethylene bis(2-methylprop-2-enoate), 2-methoxyethyl 2-methylprop-2-enoate, methyl 2-methylprop-2-enoate and 3,6,9,12-tetraoxatetradeca-1,13-diene

aka
Siloxanes and Silicones, di-Me, 3-hydroxypropyl Me, ((dimethyl(3-((2-methyl-1-oxo-2-propen-1-yl)oxy)propyl)silyl)oxy)-terminated, ethers with polyethylene glycol mono-Me ether, polymers with 2-(3-(9-butyl-1,1,3,3,5,5,7,7,9,9-decamethyl-1-pentasiloxanyl)propoxy)ethyl methacrylate, N-ethenyl-N-methylacetamide, ethylene dimethacrylate, Me methacrylate, 2-methoxyethyl methacrylate and 3,6,9,12-tetraoxatetradeca-1,13-diene

I am calling it a "Siloxane chain with various methacrylate and other components." But I am hoping for a more informative description.  Any suggestions?

I don't understand what you mean.  Let's try analogy, even if its a crude one:  many reactions involve the reagent called 'water'.  We can call that 'aich-too-oh', or dihydrogen monoxide, but those names gain us nothing that we really need to describe reactions better.  You have a trade name, a very detailed chemical formula, and you've summarized them very well in your third description.  What more does your application need?

Just put a picture of the molecule on a screen and say "that one". :)
