Title: Balancng Chemical Equations
Post by: mtl on May 15, 2006, 05:44:54 PM
I have been having a hard time balancing this chemical equation

Quote
nitric acid + calcium hydroxide yield water and calcium nitrate

Is anyone able to break it down into a step by step walkthrogh on balancing for me? Thanks.

start by writing it in equation form like so:

_HNO3 + _Ca(OH)2 --> _H2O + _Ca(NO3)2

then just fill in the blanks so that there are equal numbers of each element on each side

the coefficients should be 2, 1, 2, and 1 respectively

also remember for future reference that nitrate (NO3) has a -1 charge and so does hydroxide OH

isn't that obvious from my unbalanced equation
