Brass is a copper zinc alloy . What is the mass in grams of a brass cylinder having a length of 1.62 inch and a diameter of 0.514 inch . Is the composition of the brass is 67% copper and 33 percent zinc by mass ?
The density of copper is 8.92 grams per centimetre cube and the density of zinc is 7.14 gram per centimetre cube . Assume that the density of the brass varies linearly with composition .

By the way, the volume of an alloy is not the sum of the constituents' volumes. Sometimes it works more or less, for other alloys (shape memory NiTi, invar NiFe, bell bronze CuSn...) it's seriously wrong.
But never be more knowledgeable than your professor, or you'll get trouble.

Linear dependence with composition gives for yellow brass an error of 1.6 %.
