Title: Zinc phosphide fumes
Post by: blastermaster on August 29, 2016, 08:43:00 AM
Hi everyone,

I have one question that is bothering me. I'm about to move to the new house which has shed next to it (its sharing one bricked wall with living room). In shed i found Zinc phosphide for rats, about 3-4 kg left ftom 20kg bag (It was sealed with rope). I know that Zinc phosphide is forbidden and highly toxic, and that is what is making me unrest.

My question is: I'll spend most of my free time there, even sleep at that adjacent room. If I have removed that Zinc phosphide and opened doors of shed and living room for one week to air it properly, do I have something to worry about? Or can Zinc phosphide fumes penetrate through walls and potentialy be dangerous for person living in that room?

Im hesitate to make the move until I get the right information. i hope someone here can help me.

Thanks in advance.

Unless you have a serious need to get rid of rodents, I'd get rid of the sack of poison, for starters.  Toxic fumes should be gone, if they ever existed, with some good ventilation, maybe a powerful fan.  I wouldn't expect chronic effects, or stuff absorbed B the walls and released over time.  This is what I piece together from the MSDS.  You local environmental agency may offer some more help.

Thanks for answer. Im living in third world country, so forget about our environmental agency.
I really dont want to go into investment before getting the answer about this.

And my best hope is internet. Maybe someone know where can I found people who are expert enough in this field to give me correct answer. It would mean a world to me.

And yes, I get ridded of Zinc phosphide (it is on wheat grains) as soon I found it and it have never been used in the living room, only in arable land. But I'm afraid it maybe produces fumes that can go through walls, or can be absorbed by wall and release after on the other side of the wall. And I do know it is toxic and banned.

Thanks in advance.
