Title: Methyl benzoin from benzoin
Post by: edlovat on June 18, 2017, 01:18:34 AM
Hi everyone!
I started working in a lab recently (I have just finished my first year at Uni) and my first task is to prepare benzoin methyl ether from benzoin. My supervisor proposed reaction od benzoin with methyl iodide (1:2) in THF with 1.5 molar equivalent of LiOH (50°, 22h). Acording to NMR benzil and 2-hydroxy-1,2-diphenyl-1-Propanone were produced.
Do you have any ideas of how to easily prepare the ether with good yields?

Thank you for any ideas!

You could try methyltriflate and 2,6-lutidine in dichloromethane.
