Title: what is the meaning of sacrificial reagents

i'm reading an article about artificial photosynthesis and i can't understand the meaning of "sacrificial reagents"
Is there anyone can explain this ? ???

I am familiar with regular photosynthesis but not artificial photosynthesis.  Can you provide some context?  My initial guess is that it is a compound whose purpose is to react with an undesirable (probably reactive) intermediate.
