Title: Chlorine in tap water testing~ Dilution question

Hello! I think I know the answer to this one but just checking with the experts! I'd like to know the concentration of Chlorine in my tap water. I have a pool test kit that is as accurate as I need it to be. . .about 1ppm. The scale goes from 0 to 5 ppm. When I test my tap water, it looks like it's off the scale i.e. over 5 ppm. . .maybe not by much, but I suspect it could be as high as 6 or 7 ppm.  Rather than purchasing a much more expensive kit that has a scale from 0 to 10 say and is still accurate to within 1 ppm or so, can I just dilute a sample of my tap water with an equal amount of distilled water (or any water that contains 0 chlorine) 1:1 then use my test kit and double my resulting ppm reading? In other words, if after diluting my tap water sample 1:1, my reading should be half of the actual chlorine concentration in my tap water, correct?  Thanks so much in advance! :)

Yep. You could do a few dilutions to make sure.

Okay. . awesome. . .thanks for the quick reply. . .I'll do a 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1 dilution just for the heck of it and confirm the results make sense but no reason that they shouldn't. . .just wanted to know that my reasoning was sound. . .thanks jeffmoonchop!
