A brown black compound of the element thallium was found to contain 89.5% Tl and 10.5% O by mass. What is the oxidation state of thallium in this compound.
I haven’t really done any oxidation states before. Could somebody explain how to work this out please? :)

Could somebody please refer me to a link or a video that would help to explain how to work this out please?

First step is to find the formula from the given information. Then - you know O is (almost) always divalent.
