Title: Oxidation states
Post by: Helpmeplease1 on January 22, 2019, 07:34:55 PM
A brown black compound of the element thallium was found to contain 89.5% Tl and 10.5% O by mass. What is the oxidation state of thallium in this compound.

I haven’t really done any oxidation states before. Could somebody explain how to work this out please? :)

First step is to find the formula from the given information. Then - you know O is (almost) always divalent.
