Title: New design
Post by: chenbeier on March 19, 2019, 11:01:18 AM
Please can you change the colour of the sixangle (benzene) buttons, it is difficult to see if somebody post or changes took place. Black and white or green and red would be nicer.

The talk bubbles will be filled in when there is a new post. They will only be an outline of talk bubbles where there aren't any new posts. Does that help?

I understand how it works, but the contrast now is very bad, with my eyes I cannot see clearly if it is changed. My suggestion is to ues a more contrast colour for it.

Ok chenbeier. I'll work on designing more contrasted icons. Any other issues you'd like fixed?

So far no, it takes time probably to find others. But the Buttons were directly eye catched.

I agree with chenbeier. Something that pops more for forums/threads with new posts would be helpful.

I've worked in the icon a bit so there is more contrast.

Black benzene rings = no new posts.
White hexagon with chat bubble = new posts.

I guess for me the problem isn't the contrast, but that without context it's not clear which signifies new posts. I.e., it could just as easily be black benzene rings = new posts, and white hexagon with chat bubble could = no new posts. For frequent users eventually we'd figure it out and become accustomed, but for new users it can be needlessly nonintuitive.

I agree. If you hover over the icon it'll tell you whether there is a new post or not, so hopefully, new users won't struggle for too long

I'll continue to think of better ways to show it. I was tossing around the idea of using a chelator, but it just didn't seem practical or that intuitive either. .

Can you do something like what it is now: same icons more or less, but the "no new post" version is kind of faded out and the "new post" version is bold.

I can take a stab at it.

Not exactly the design, but previously I used the option to stay logged in for one day, which I preferred to the options "X minutes" or "always" available presently.
And while I'm here: I'd prefer the "return to this topic" box under the typing window to be checked by default.

It should be checked by default now in both themes, let me know if that's not the case. Would you want it to say stay logged in for 1440  minutes instead?

I've set the default cookie time to 1440 minutes. I've also made the cookie https compliant, so let me know if that causes any additional problems.

To my taste it's better.
"Return to this topic" is also checked by default now.
Thanks!

"Return to this topic" is also checked by default now.

Somehow I missed that when you first asked - that's something that you could set up individually, in your own forum profile.

O yes, I see it now.

----------

The users icons have disappeared.

----------

The login controls on the main page were more convenient than on a popup, to my taste.

What do you mean by users icon?
Title: Re: New design
Post by: Enthalpy on March 26, 2019, 07:12:22 AM
In the threads, left of the posts, under the username. I positively remember there were icons (avatars?) there three days ago. Only Mitch displays one presently.

Some users had them, some not. One can add an avatar in the profile, one can configure the forum to display/not display user avatars.

Avatars shouldn't have been affected unless you are looking at the mobile version with the new theme. Currently, only guests can see the new theme and new members since last week. Unless you specifically changed your theme default in your forum profile section.

I'll release another beta test for regular members after I fix up the items mentioned so far and other issues I've caught along the way.

I'm an old member and changed no setting. I see only Mitch's avatar, whether logged in or not. PC, Win XP, Firefox 52. Screenshot of my settings is appended.

Enthalpy, you can't see Borek's avatar?

True, I see Borek's avatar too. So at least two, but not many more.

I append a screenshot of the settings of my avatar in my profile. I could download the picture from its address at Chemicalforums.

Did you try https?
Title: Re: New design
Post by: Enthalpy on March 29, 2019, 07:36:23 AM
The image downloads from both http://www.chemicalforums... and https://www.chemicalforums...
My avatar is stored in a thread of Chemicalforums, but other users supposedly store theirs elsewhere and I don't see them neither, so it shouldn't be a matter of storage location.

Strange, even avatar stored at CF server is loaded through a proxy, I wonder if that's not (somehow) a reason behind.

Code: [Select]
<img class="avatar" src="https://www.chemicalforums.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.chemicalforums.com%2Findex.php%3Faction%3Ddlattach%3Btopic%3D1809.0%3Battach%3D8160&hash=f3351ba08fc67605023c05b37da0372f" width="100" alt="" />

Hi Enthalpy. I fixed your avatar. Users will just have to reupload it in their profiles moving forward.

This is my first impression of the unlogged in pages.
I am using Google Chrome.
So I looked over the signon page before signing on.
Caveat, I do not have a good memory of what the old page looked like.

There is no date and time anywhere on the screen including none at the top of page.

There are 3 icons at the top that do show any mouse hover message.
They do go to search, logon, and register.
They appear to be redundant to the 4 buttons just below said icons.

I clicked on

The

I look at a few of the subforum links and they seem to go where they should.

I can not remember but I thought the old screen had advertisements
The new screen does not.

Do people really want date and time on the forum?

Do people really want date and time on the forum?
I am not sure the average user does use it.
I noticed that it was part of every page on the forum in the past (maybe part of the default).

I know I have referred to it when the page time was not in the same time zone as myself.
I found it useful when looking at situations of necromancy.
I found it handy when looking at the profile of another member (for instance checking with register date or last active date).
And, there were times I referred to it that I can not now remember why, but it made it easier to have it handy.

As for the average user I am not sure.

Did the original designers of the forum software see a need?

I need the date and hour. I can't tell for other people.

I've added the time and date to the new template, you can logout and see it in action.
