Copper to oxygen ratio in Cu2O is slightly less than 2:1. Why this substance is a p-type semiconductor?

The usual answer would be vacancy blah blah, similarly to GaAs.

BUT there is significant divergence on this particular topic, and additional explanations or variations exist
