Extraction and Analysis of Dibenzothiphene
« on: February 18, 2007, 10:20:00 PM »
I am trying to determine the ability of my bacterial consortium to utilize dibenzothiophene as a carbon source.
After 1 month of culture, I will determine the remaining dibenzothiophene from my 10 ml culture.
Ive read from a certain journal that extraction  was done using ethyl acetate. Another journal however used dichloromethane but did not give explanation in the process of extraction.

If I will use ethyl acetate for example, I will add equal volume of it to my bacterial culture.. Could you help me what should be done next?

Thanks

My suggestion is that you "design" a procedure in parallel using both solvents: dichloromethane and ethyl acetate, and then compare and evaluate with which of two you could get the better extraction. The methods that I have seen in journal and/or internet use dichloromethane. The methodology (with dichloromethane) it would have to be similar to that you have in details. This will allow you to optimize what is the best. Remember consider costs in your selection.

QUESTION: Do you have a procedure to extract Dibenzothiphene?

Could you post information about your references? To this question you can send me a Private Message.
