« on: March 25, 2010, 09:55:46 PM »
Hey all first time post.

in the lab last week we did an experiment combining aqueous sodium bicarbonate witi hdilute supluric acid. im trying to work oiut the balanced equation for it. i know that H20 and CO2 are produced as well as NaSO4 and H2(CO3)2, but i cant balance it with where everything is suppost to go. could somebody help me?

thanks in advance,
Mitch

Hiya Mitch,
I can help you, but I want a mole snack if I do. (it's the give snack tab near my name)
I've never seen a mole in a bag of animal crackers , but I've heard they're tasty. Can I have one please :)

Anyway, I'm just kidding, you don't have to do that, I'll help you for free.

The first thing you need to do is write the equation, even though it isn't balanced, which you more or less did, this is it:

NaHCO3 + H2SO4  :rarrow: NaSO4 + H2(CO3)2+ H2O + CO2

Then the smart thing to do is to figure out what is on the left and what is on the right
For example: there is one sodium in the reactants and one sodium in the products

Now that I have stared at your problem for a while, I believe that the formula is wrong.

This is what it should look like

NaHCO3 + H2SO4 --> Na2SO4 + H2CO3 --> Na2SO4 + H20 + CO2

and you should be able to balance it from there.

H2(CO3)2

As Wald already signalled - no such compound.
