gas laws question
« on: October 02, 2011, 09:47:25 PM »
What mass of acrylnitrile is produced when the following pressures of reagent gases are reacted in a 150L reactor at 25 C?
C3H6 (g) 800kPa   NH3 (g) 500 kPa  O2 (g) 1500 kPa

C3H6 (g) + NH3 (g) + 3/2 O2 (g) --------> C3H3N(g) + 3H2O (g,l)

mass of C3H3N = ?
V = 150L
T= 25 C = 298.15K
MM C3H3N = 53.064 g mol-1
P = 800 + 500 + (1.5 x 1500) = 3500 kPa = 35.03 atm

m = PVM
       RT
= (35.03atm)(150L)(53.064 g mol-1)
    (0.08206 L atm K-1 mol-1)(298.15K)
= 11396.330099 g = 11.39 kg

This is the wrong answer.  I think my mistake is something to do with the pressure of the system or stoichiometry but I am not sure.  A nudge in the right direction would be helpful.
Thanks :)

Looks like a limiting reagent question to me...

Thanks so much!  I think I got it.  It's 1.64 kg

I got 1.61kg, 1.64kg seems to be the mass of water.

Rats!  Back to the drawing board.  I think I am close though.
