Rxn of Carboxylic Acid with Salt an Alkyl Halide
« on: September 05, 2012, 02:07:10 AM »
Hi,

Please view attached image.  I have two questions.
1)  Structure of acid anhydride should have a prime symbol on the R on the right hand side as show in the image?
2)  I drew by hand the structures for Rxn of Carboxylic Acid with Salt an Alkyl Halide.  But I don't know how to name them.  Can you please help me name the two reactants and two products?
Thank you.

Well you said yourself.
You are reacting the sodium salt of a carboxylic acid with an alkyl halide, you get the products which are an ester and sodium halide.

What is the reactivity of a carboxylate anion when compared to the corresponding alkoxide? What solvent would best be used to make this reaction proceed optimally?
