What is the basic chemical equation....?
« on: April 11, 2013, 03:00:44 PM »
We are testing for nitrates in water and I am struggling to find the chemical equations of what we have done. I think our work is based in Greiss methods of determining nitrate levels.

Our standard solutions were diluted potassium nitrate solutions.

We added hydrogen chloride, sulfanilic acid and granular Zn/NaCl to our samples/standards to reduce the nitrates to nitrites.

Then added N-1-nathyl and sodium acetate to produce a red colour.

Can anyone *delete me*?
Thanks

This is going to be difficult, these sorts of reactions aren't simple ones for beginning chemistry students.  However, if you're going to take a stab at them, you're going to have to start out writing the reagents as chemical formulas.   You'll have to use the descriptions you're given -- when nitrate is reduced to nitrite, what happens?  And what else happens, when something is reduced.  Understanding the color change can be difficult, but something was changed, from some chemical compound, to some other one.  You may be able to look up the structures of what you've started with, and what you end up with.
Hey, I'm not judging.  I just like to shoot straight.  I'm a man of science.
