Si=X (X=anything) info needed
« on: April 11, 2006, 05:53:57 AM »
Hi
I'm in the process of writing an essay on Silicon double bond to any other element and I am having real trouble trying to find info on it. I am going to look at Si=S, Si=C and Si=N mostly but will need more info as it is a 4000word essay. Not due for a month but i thought i had better make a start. I have looked in text books, searched the net etc with not alot of good infomation found.

Please can anyone assist me with any other info they know of like synthesis especially Si=S info.
Any help would be much apreciated.
Thanks

A good portion can be spent on comparing bond lengths, strengths, etc of silicon bonds to carbon bonds (Silicon's Period 2 Group-mate).  The differences between the two are intriguing, and have important consequences.  For example, plastics and stuff are usually made of carbon polymers...but silicone polymers (with different properties than their carbon analogues) are also common.

I once tried to find the Si=O bond length.  You can see the post HERE:

AWK made a good suggestion in consulting the International Tables for Crystallography.  It is one of the only references that makes this type of information readily available

Good luck with your essay!

Thanks I will go see if I can get that book. I just looked on the library catalog and it says the book has restricted acess so hopefully I can get a look at it.

I looked up Volume C. Unfortunately, I did not find information on Si=X double bond. Alternatively, I searched  CSD (old version from 2000). PDF of this search  I sent to your E-mail
(about 350 kB)
