Hi guys, I'm attaching a file with an assignment I got, which I can't seem to solve..
Appreciate any help.

2.  How many carbon atoms will you need to make ethanol into 2-butanone?  What reactions do you know that form C-C bonds?

The nothing I have shown is my attempt. I have no idea what to do.

Then you have to go back to your book or notes, such questions are always asked in the context of what was taught.

OK, let's start with the first two in exercise 4, number 1.  The chemical formula of A, the starting material is C3H6. There is information in the molecular formula itself.  What compound is this (probably), and what functional group (probably) is present?

Well, it's most likely Propene and not Cyclopropane since A-> C is a hydration reaction.
I'm just not sure how to use this information to solve for everything.

In your texbook check rules that govern addition (HCl, H2O) to a double bond.

This is what I have so far

The reaction for organometallic compounds states something like this (forgive my lack of formula knowledge here):

RC(O)O,MgX
When the O in the brackets is double bonded to the carbon.

I just don't quite understand what the comma means?

Sometimes it is information about ionic compounds, though it is not formally correct.

I sometimes use a comma to indicate a counter-ion, but mostly when writing formulas for sodium or potassium salts.

In proceeding from D + E through F to G, you seem to have lost two carbon atoms.  It's getting late here, and I might be missing something...

You were indeed right. In any case, I had already turned in the assignment after correcting it.

Thanks for all the *delete me*
