Errata of Physical Chemistry by Peter Atkins 10th edition
« on: June 19, 2015, 03:20:30 AM »
Hello, in pp. 46 of the book, I found that the author wrote 'Because the molar volume of a perfect gas is equal to RT/p, an
equivalent expression is Z=RT/pVm ° , which we can write as...', should the expression 'Z=RT/pVm °' be changed to 'pVm/RT'? Or did I made a mistake? :(

My second edition says Z = pVm/RT, so it looks like a mistake, but better check that yours is not using a different definition. Check the definition of Z, is it consistent with that expression, and is that expression consistent with others in the chapter/book? Is there a graph or table of values? My graph shows Z, as I've defined it, increasing monotonically with pressure for H2 at 0°C, while for methane, ethene and ammonia it first decreases then increases. Your definition of Z would turn it upside down.

Tenth edition. That makes me feel old!

Are you going to enlighten us? We don't all have it to hand, you know.

On page 97, in Table 2D.2*, three data values are incorrectly shifted to the adjacent left column, namely - Tb /K for CO2 is printed as +1.10, whereas it should be kept blank. So actually μ/(K bar-1) for will be +1.10.
Similarly Tf/K for He is printed as 4.2. It should be printed in the next column for Tb/K.
And lastly, the value -0.060 printed in Tb/K for CO2 should be 4.2 as mentioned above, and μ/(K bar-1) for He should be -0.060.
All other values are in correct place, I believe.
Above correction based on the Resource section, page 979, Table 2D.2,
in the same book.
- Best Regards,
  H K.
