molecule questions hnrs chem
« on: March 09, 2008, 04:38:04 PM »
I have some questions involving mainly molecular structures and hybrids and such

Cmpound c 4 h 6

   H      H H
H-C=C=C-C-H
              H

I need to know the hybrid orbitals used by each carbon?
All the C needs 4 bonds so i dont see why they arent all sp3.
I thinks what right though i sp2 sp sp2 and sp3 by making each C its own structure then my book has a table with the hybrids for each shape.
Also how do i find a dipole moments direction? For ex sf4
i have to also find the preferred gemotry for that? i Think it is see saw

Also is an mlolecule having differant atomic arrangments the same as being a resonance structure?

LAstly i don't get how to find the bond angles?
What are the bond angles for sf4(seesaw) and Brf3(t shaped)

thanks

Seems OK to me

Also how do i find a dipole moments direction? For ex SF4

Look into things like electronegativity of the atoms involved in the bond

I have to also find the preferred geometry for that? i Think it is see saw

Why? Could it be square-planar, or tetrahedral?

Also is an molecule having different atomic arrangments the same as being a resonance structure?

No (at least, I don't think so). Resonance to me is more to do with differences in arrangements of electrons. Different arrangements of atoms could be as subtle as keto-enol tautomerism, but this is not resonance.

Lastly i don't get how to find the bond angles?

How accurate do you want the figures? Is it sufficient to ignore the differences between lone-pairs and bonded pairs and consider the angles of a T shape (for the latter), or to say that lone pair/bonded pair repel more than bonded pair/bonded pair - perhaps see http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bromine_trifluoride&oldid=194653373 and http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bromine_trifluoride&oldid=194653373

C4H6
1. two double bonds - two isomers
2. 1 triple bond - two isomers
3. 1 cycle (3 or 4 membered) and 1 double bond - I think 5 isomers are possible
