4th ed. Morrison & Boyd. Is it too old to use?
« on: April 19, 2008, 12:53:48 PM »
Hey guys, so as the title suggests, I've been studying organic chemistry from Morrison & Boyd's "Organic Chemistry" (4th edition). I realize the book is up to a 6th edition now, but I happened to have the 4th edition around. Has any one seen both editions and knows how drastic the changes are? Is it necessary that I get the newer edition before I go too far into the book? (I'm still at chapter 7) I'm looking to be able to get a good understanding of the basics of organic chemistry, maybe at the level of a 1st or 2nd year undergrad. Would a newer edition be necessary for something like this?

Thanks in advance

At the sort of level you're talking, in my opinion the 4th edition is probably just as good as the 6th. Though bear in mind questions may change, so if your lecturer says chapter 4, q 3-5 (for instance) you may need access (library or similar if nothing else) to the same edition as they are using.

Can you perhaps take the 6th out from a library or something to see if it's more to your learning style, rather than buy it outright straightaway?
