Resonance Structures
« on: June 01, 2008, 11:21:09 PM »
I have a question,

Performing nitration (HNO3/H2SO4) on naphthol will yield two ortho isomers. But will it yield two para isomers as well?

Can someone use resonance structures to explain which para isomer will be more energetically favourable? (i.e. have more resonances)

And, also a general question. Does anyone know where there are resources on resonance structures, because for me it seems a difficult concept to understand compared to some of the other stuff. Can someone tell me exactly what resonance structures are supposed to represent and how the above problem uses it.

Thanks!
