IUPAC naming.
« on: June 20, 2008, 10:28:52 PM »
Hello Chemists,

                         CH3
                         l
CH3CH2CH2CHCH2CCH3
                l        l
                CH3   CH2CH3

I would name this structure 2,4Dimethyl-2-ethylheptane

However according to my sheet it says this is 33,5trimethyloctane....

Does anyone agree with me that this is incorrect?
Can any help clarify why I am wrong??

Thank you!!!

Hi mate the answer in your sheet is right.

1.carbon chain should be longest so 8 carbons are taken.
2.in normal way substituents are named as trimethyl .

It's not really a trick.  It just depends on how you draw the structure and the parent alkane.  For help in the future redraw the parent chain and then number and add on substituents.
