Carbonyl Reduction :)
« on: July 05, 2012, 10:06:15 PM »
Will H2 and Pd/C reduce the ketone (shown below) to a secondary alcohol? Or will it just reduce the alkene? Or will it reduce both? I'm confused, because my lab manual states that this is a "ring-reduction" reaction, but I'm not sure if that's correct.

Hydrogenation will, when carried out under "normal conditions", RT 1 atmosphere, will reduce the double bond only. Higher temperature and pressure will reduce both. It also depends on the catalyst used. Have a look here.

Thank you for the information. Unfortunately, the question states neither the reaction conditions nor the catalyst used, so I will have to consult my professor to clarify  ;)
