Help with making glyceryl stearate at home
« on: January 09, 2014, 12:26:03 AM »
Hi,
I want to make glyceryl stearate at home to put in lotions and came across this post.
http://curious-soapmaker.com/glyceryl-stearate-home-made-emulsifier.html

I was wondering if using a carboxylic acid (citric or acetic) as mentioned in the post as the catalyst was ok? I have two concerns:
1. That the acid isn't strong enough
2. that the citric or acetic acid would get involved and I would end up with glyceryl citrate instead of glyceryl stearate??

Can someone please chime in?
My background...Once upon a time...a long time ago...I did biochemistry and chemistry at university but didn't become a scientist. I've gotten into make bath and beauty products at home in the last couple of years and love it!

I think you need to read the forum rules. Self-medication is not for discussion.

Ok, I'd only read about the no drugs or explosives bit and hadn't got to the 'no cosmetics part'. A shame really as making lotions and soaps at home is a great way to get into synthetic chemistry.

There will be always a gray area where the soap making ends and the cosmetics start. I think we can leave the discussion open, but I reserve the right to close it the moment I find it getting too risky.
