CuSO4 through dilute H2SO4
« on: October 03, 2015, 08:09:55 AM »
Hello all,
I am thinking about making CuSO4. If the process of H2SO4 + electricity + Cu electrodes were to be attempted, would dilute H2SO4 (20-40%) work? If not, what could be done to make it work (boiling it produces toxic SOx fumes). (Also a while ago I saw a thread on metal displacement of MgSO4).
Thanks

@dylanail
Your suggestion may be OK assuming that you are willing to accept up to 10% impurities.

CuSO2 from Cu: you could check on Wiki the conditions of copper electrorefining, because this is half of their process. And, yes, the solution is not very concentrated.

Really?  I have been buying bottles of "Zep Root Kill" which claim 99% purity.  And they look pretty nice, blue crystals, very little or no insoluble residue.

If you need to clean it up, there's always recrystallization from hot water.

I based my reply on information from a site like this

Maybe you have better information.

99% purity reported here:

This is also present on the bottle's label.  And like I said, it looks GREAT.  In fact better than the stuff sold by some chemical companies.  And the price is right.

So I would never want to make cupric sulfate.  I prefer to make other things from cupric sulfate.
