Stoiciometry with Polymers and Synethesis of Adipoyl Chloride

(1/1)

yay:
I'm trying to write a reaction between thionyl chloride, adipic acid, and dimethylformamide, but cant figure out how to balance it. So far I have:

SOCl2 +C6H10O4 + C7H3NO   :rarrow: C6H8Cl2O2

What would be the other product

Also, using stochiometry for the reaction:

C6H8Cl2O2 + C6H16N2  :rarrow: (C12H22N2O2)n

for example, knowing that you have 5.85 g of C6H8Cl2O2, how would u determine the amount of (C12H22N2O2)n since there is no set way to balance it

wildfyr:
You get HCl and SO2. DMF is only a catalyst it is not consumed.

rolnor:
You dont need DMF, just reflux the acid in excess thionylchloride for 1 hour and distill or just evaporate.

There are byproducts that you have left out.

In general polymerization equations can be definitely balanced with n - and that will allow calculation of the mass ratio of the polymer to the monomer.

You can buy adipoyl chloride:
