esterification
« on: June 26, 2019, 07:51:43 AM »
If powder of 6-Bromo-2-naphthoic acid (which was added into methanol) is fully dissolved it means that esterification is occured and the result of this reaction is methyl 6-bromo-2-naphthoate or it maybe just dissolution of the acid in alcohol without any reaction?

what is required for a carboxylic acid to react with methanol to form an ester?

What happens if you remove the methanol?

I am not sure but I guess that esterification requires high temperature and some catalyst but in my case this acid dissolved in room temp w/o catalyst. This why I have asked can be esterification or not in this case?

correct you need a ctalyst, normally H2SO4, so what do you think the answer is?

So in this case it will be just dissolved molecules of the acid in methanol. Is it correct? And there are not any other molecules (for example, ester) in this solution?
And how i can check it?

Why wouldn't a naphthoic acid dissolve in methanol?
