hOW TO SOLVE THIS
« on: June 29, 2019, 05:44:01 AM »
Hello sir
How to solve this
When 6.3gm of sodium bicarbonate are added to 30.0gm of acetic acid solution , the residual solution is found to weight 33.0gm The mass of carbon dioxide released in the reaction is

1. 3gm 2. 0.91gm 3. 1.91gm 4. 3.3gm

You mixed two solutions and released carbon dioxide. The final mass of the reaction mixture (after reaction) was given. How much carbon dioxide released?

First, AcOH is excess, so CO2=6.3g/84*44=3.3gm.
in other way ,NaHCO3:6.3g+AcOH:30g=mix:33g+CO2:3.3g by Law of conservation of mass

From the content of the problem, we have no basis to say that acetic acid is in excess (30.0gm of acetic acid solution - we do not know the concentration of the solution). From the numerical data, we can check that acetic acid was at least in the stoichiometric amount and 3.3 g is the correct answer.

When 6.3 g sodium bicarbonate and 30.0 g acetic acid are mixed together, the total mass must be 36.3 g.  If this mass decreased to 33.0 g, it must be due to the release of CO2.  Therefore, the mass of CO2 released = 36.3 g - 33.0 g = 3.3 g.  So, the answer choice is 4.

Incidentally, it is not correct to use gm for gram.  The correct abbreviation is g.
