Acid Protection Cross coupling reactions

Whenever I search in litterature for a coupling reaction I often find that the carboxylic acid is being protected and I am curious if there are any particular reasoning behind this?
I've tried searching the litterature but I am having trouble finding any useful answers.

migth be that carboxylic acids are very hard to handle. they stick to silica so not easy to column and can be a bit water soluble making isolation hard. what is the reaction you are investigating?
