Ritter Reaction. Distilation Question.
« on: August 21, 2019, 09:07:13 AM »
Just learning about Solvent extraction followed by Distilation. My chosen subject, to the irritation of my lecturor, is the 1948 Ritter experiment. After extracting Benzedrene base with Toluene, is then says distilation is required. Toluene starts to evaporate at 110.6 Celsius and Benzedrene, 203 repectively. But why do both liquids require continued distilation. Cant the Toluene be removed, without bringing over/evaporating the second . I'm very confused.

Distillation helps in collecting the product also. Evaporate Toluene and collect it by condensation and this process is distillation.
You can collect both substances separately.
