Extractions
« on: October 10, 2019, 03:19:20 PM »
I need some help here with extraction reactions. The first question asked me to show the reaction of 2-naphthol and NaOH. The hydroxide group in 2-Naphthol is split up, so it’s 2 carbon rings with an O- attached to it, + Na and water. The question I’m stuck on asks how I get a solid form of 2-naphthol from that salt.

My understanding is that I need to use a weak base (?) to return the Naphthol to the aqueous layer, then vacuum filter it out.

I’d love if someone could tell me if I’m close or totally out to lunch. Thanks

Oh wow thank you that’s perfect. So the procedure would be isolate the aqueous solution in a sep funnel, add HCl, then filter out the solid using a vacuum filter?
