Buffer preparation
« on: October 11, 2019, 12:07:38 AM »
Hi all,

I need to make a pH 7 phosphate buffer using lithium phosphate. Ideally I should have Li2HPO4 and LiH2PO4 to make the buffer, but we only have Li3PO4 available. It also seems that commercially, only LiH2PO4 is available.

Does anyone have an idea of how a pH 7 buffer can be made using only Li3PO4? And if there are any reactions that can be done to make the dihydrogen and monohydrogen salts using Li3PO4?

Just acidify solution with phosphoric acid.

I agree with Borek.  The only thing I can add is that in my experience Li3PO4 is not very soluble on its own, but I imagine that it will come into solution in the presence of phosphoric acid.
