Synthesis reaction
« on: October 17, 2019, 05:53:20 AM »
I would like to try a synthesis reaction to produce magnesium sulfide using elemental magnesium and sulfur.
Mg + S --> MgS
Should I mix them and heat them?

Thanks

Quite difficult IMHO. It would work under an inert atmosphere only (and by inert I mean a noble gas). Both Mg and S will eagerly react with the air oxygen, burning Mg will also react with nitrogen. Very small quantities, fume hood, test tube, glasses, gloves to see what happens - yes, method of synthesis - no.
