This is a nurdrage youtube video where he is trying to get toluene from paint thinner. It has methanol MEK and acetone so why is he doing distillation first? Why not put the whole thing in a sep funnel mix the the stuff you don't want with water then take off the toluene and then distil it? Then most of the distillation work is done and toluene doesn't form an azeotrope to deal with? Seems backwards but he has a phd and I don't so why would you go through extra work and impurities?

not all the other components will go into the water, there will be partitioning into both.
