Ethanol for iodine solution
« on: January 18, 2020, 10:54:26 AM »
Looking to get my hands on some ethanol to make iodine solution with KI and I (Tincture of iodine).
Online i can only find denatured alcohol, so it seems my options are:
1. Keep looking for pure ethanol
2. Distill some vodka,
3. Ferment and distill
4. Try some chemical means to convert denatured alcohol to clean ethanol??? Have no idea if this is even possible.

My goal is to make Tincture of iodine, so purity is important. What do you all think is my best option? End use would be to treat skin infections, but also am trying to learn the method of making it.
Thanks

I am familiar with everclear and moon shine. My main concern with spirits was any flavor additives, but everclear is "probably" pure enough as is, but I might distill it anyways.... Starting with 95% everclear definitely beats starting with 40% vodka.

You can't distil 95% ethanol. It forms an azeotrope.
