When benzene consists of CH3 and COOH why we named it tolualdehyde?

(1/1)

Fish200398:
When benzene consists of CH3 and COOH why we named it tolualdehyde (making of terepthalic acid)? The aldehyde supposed to be more priority than R alkyl, so the name is methyl benzaldehyde

chenbeier:
-COOH is not aldehyde. It is a carbonic acid. Aldehyde is -CHO.
It would be  p- Methyl benzoeic acid or p-Toluencarbonic acid.

AWK:
4-Methylbenzaldehyde is an IUPAC name. Other names are commonly used synonyms.

MNIO:
which of these do you have trouble with?
