Which element is a black powder and sometimes a precious stone? The only one I can think of is carbon, but a precious stone??? I wouldn't have thought so.

You are on the right track. Google for the allotropic forms of carbon.

It IS carbon. Black powder and... precious stone (diamond is carbon, only extremely compacted).
