Propyl Vs. Propanyl
« on: March 05, 2020, 08:09:49 AM »
What is the difference between propyl and propanyl?

I wrote 2-cyclopropyl prop-1-ene for this structure but the answer says 2-cyclopropanyl prop-1-ene.

Image of the structure is attached in case the link doesn't load. Thank you :)

From the Wikipedia article on IUPAC nomenclature:

"The cyclic structures can also be treated as functional groups themselves, in which case they take the prefix "cycloalkyl-" (e.g. "cyclohexyl-") or for benzene, "phenyl-". "

I too would say "cyclopropyl" not "cyclopropanyl".

I would call this
  2-cyclopropylpropene

you don't need the "1" to specify where the = is in the propene
cyclopropyl is a preferred IUPAC name for that group.
