Hydrogen Sulfide Decomposition

(1/1)

Braided:
Hey, just wanted to know whether Hydrogen Sulfide would decompose at 10 degree c in an enclosed space and how long that might take

chenbeier:
I don't think so.

Enthalpy:
In oil and gas deposits, it lasts for hundreds of millions of years, making a hazard of field operations.

Hydrogen sulphide would rather burn with air or some oxidiser, if an igniter or some catalyst enables that. At room temperature it lasts in air, enough to accumulate up to explosive concentration.

blackcat:
I remember when I was an undergraduate (about 15 years ago), there was a very serious accident in China Sichuan where people were poisoned by hydrogen sulphide gas (this implies it does not decompose at room temperature)

As you may know, this gas is super foul smelling. And you know what? very soon your nose get saturated by this gas and can no longer smell it again.
