how to make ammonia smelling salts.
« on: April 07, 2020, 12:58:33 PM »
hello, i'm trying to make ammonia smelling salts, they sell them premade, but it's usually very expensive.

i heard it's just ammonia carbonate, is that really it? can i just go to the store and buy ammonia carbonate and inhale it and get the same effects?

also i heard i can make those salts using liquid ammonia and muriatic acid. i have some liquid ammonia (it doesn't say the %, and i have 10% muriatic acid, how can i make it?

i've never done anything with chemistry, so i'm very ignorant in the subject.

You can use harthorn salt, it is ammoniumhydogencarbonate. Ist normally used for backing purpose at Christmas Time. Muratic acid doesnt work, because ammmoniumchloride which will be formed has no odor.

would smelling straight ammonia (the one used for cleaning) work the same?

Probably, but what is your Target. What you like to do. Vor me it makes no sense to produce products what has strange smell.

The stimulant effect of smelling salts is due to the ammonia, which irritates a person’s nasal and lung membranes when they sniff it. The result is that the person involuntarily inhales and starts to breathe faster, which sends more oxygen to the brain.

it's a quick energy and awareness boost

The original smelling salts were made from deer antlers - hence "hartshorn"...

Either ammonium carbonate or ammonium hydrogen carbonate slowly decomposes at room temperature to ammonia, water, and carbon dioxide.  So if kept sealed, when you open up the jar and take a whiff it gives you a jolt of ammonia which is irritating to the nose and makes you want to get away from it!

Do NOT do that.
