Trying to make calcium acetate
« on: April 17, 2020, 03:47:05 AM »
Hello,

I wanted to make calcium acetate from CaO and acetic acid. So I put 1 kg of burnt lime together with 1.5 l of acetic acid (98%) and some water. After it heavily reacted, I let it dry out and got a white powder. I thought it must be calcium acetate, but it is water insoluble. Calcium acetate would be soluble at about 300 g/l, this stuff does not dissolve at all. Does anyone know what that could be?

Do you really got CaO and not gypsum?

Label said burnt lime. Also, it started to boil when I was mixing it together. I thought it was because of a neutralisation reaction...

probably excess calcium oxide, you are not using enough acetic acid

That would still react with water when trying to dissolve.

I agree there is not enough acetic acid.

calcium hydroxide has a solubility of 1.73 g/l at 20°C

Right, must be CaO/CaOH then, thanks.
