Cahn Ingold Prelog rules - need help
« on: September 17, 2006, 11:20:33 AM »
i'm a bit hazy on CIP stuffs and would like to clarify a few things

1) which is bigger priority? benzene or NH2 ? the book says H2N but i thought benzene is bigger priority?

2) if i have to write down the molecule with the dash, wedge and line format....the highest priority will always be in the front (wedge) and the smallest priority will be behind (dash)...right?

3) if i have 1 group CH3 and another CH3CH2 ...i have to add up all their atomic no. for each group to see which takes higher priority ...?

4) does anyone know of any good websites that has questions and answers for CIP rules?

while we're at it...can 2 single and 2 lone pairs form a sp3 orbital? my lecture note doesnt say it very clearly and i am guessing it doesnt matter as long as u have 4 single or 2 single or 3 single with lone pairs ..it will still be a sp3 orbital

reread the Cahn-Ingold-Prelog nomenclature and try to remember the rules. Than the answers to your questions would be straightforward.
