Mixing - Why do some reactions take hours

Why do some steps in chemistry need hours of mixing when there is no change in the temperature while mixing.

Mixing and reacting are two different critters.  Temperature change depends on rate of heat generation / consumption vs rate of heat addition/removal (heating / cooling).  Do you have a specific question/example?
