Functional group functions?
« on: September 15, 2020, 01:57:12 PM »
Hello anyone! Is there a good way to memorize the functions of functional groups? Like polarity, what bonds it makes with other chemicals, and stuff like that? I know that this is more of a biology question, but I can't seem to wrap my head around the chemistry here. Thanks!

There are chemical and biological functions that could be associated with certain functional groups, but I don't know of a way to memorize them.  For example a chemist might see an amide and think of it in terms of its relative inertness to hydrolysis.  A biologist might think in terms of a peptide bond.  Both might be interested in its planarity.
