Salicylic acid to phenol
« on: November 07, 2020, 11:15:41 PM »
Hello everyone I am new to this forum. I am an amateur chemist.
I have a question about the decarboxylation of salicylic acid. When heating the salicylic acid the still head temp. never exceeds around 125°C. I was lead to believe however, that the fraction that comes over at around 145°C and 165°C is what I should be looking for. Also when I re-distill the phenol that I acquired it does go to a much higher still head temp. (175°C).So why does the still head temp. not get so high when I am doing the initial decarboxylation?
Thanks,
Jim
