Organic Synthesis Calculation
« on: January 16, 2021, 10:49:11 AM »
Hello everybody,

I found this synthesis on reaxys and struggle a little bit with the calculation of the substances (especially with the NaOH). Can maybe somebody help me to figure out, how they got the numbers they have written here?

2-mercaptoethan-l , l-d2-l-ol (1.63 g, 20.44 mmol, 1 eq) was dissolved in methanol (20 mL) , followed by addition of a 1M NaOH solution (17 mL, 51.10 mmol, 2.5 eq) , and iodine (3.113 g, 12.26 mmol, 0.6 eq) was added after partial
dimerization occurred after an hour. The reaction was then extracted with ethyl acetate and the organic layers were washed with sodium thiosulfate 10% and brine, dried and concentrated to furnish 2,2'- disulfanediylbis (ethan-1, l-dg-l-ol) (1.46 g, 9.2 mmol,
 90 %)

Write down the reaction equation and calculate. You need two numbers that are given. The reaction is very simple, only the names look so terrible.

That is less than a problem. I am still confused about how they got the numbers for the NaOH (especially in regards to the equivalent...)

Write down the reaction equation and show your calculation.

Your post has more errors. You must check the original publication.
My advice to write a reaction and check the figures can help if this error occurred in the original work (but that's rarely the case). in addition, it will help to understand the meaning of equivalents very frequently used in the patent literature.
