Hello,
If I have a chemical compound and expect what it should be, but don't know what it(really) is, how can I verify wether the substance actually matches with what it says on the label?
I am a lay person.

There is no simple "one size fits all" approach. Broadly speaking when you know what it can be you select an appropriate analytical method to do tests. These can be reasonably simple (just mixing solution with another solution) or highly complicated and requiring expensive hardware.
