Determine The Mass...

1) Determine the mass of phosphorous pentachloride that is produced from a reaction between 166.36 g of phosphorus and 1.20kg of chlorine.

2)calculate the mass of excess that is left over.

3) if 825 g of phosphorus pentachloride was obtained in a lab, what is the percent yield?


Thanks, if you could help. I really do appreciate it. The teacher gave our class this and nobody has been taught it. It is 16 marks so I don’t want it to mess up my mark. Really appreciate if I could get some help. Thanks

Hey. Thanks for the response. Where I live class is done online and this teacher hands us worksheets and says go do it. We haven’t learnt this topic and I have no idea where to start. Honestly I would love to share my thoughts or show my knowledge about this but I simply don’t know. Thanks for the hint but I still don’t know how to tackle this question. If you can’t help because of the rules no problem. I appreciate your input.

I do not know what resources you have for the course you are taking.
For instance are you given a periodic table with the atomic weights of the elements.
Are you using a text book for the course.

But there are online resources you can use such as Wikipedia and Google.
Also you might consider using Youtube.

Writing out a reaction equation is usually a good place to start for any problem in chemistry.

The concept of a limiting reagent is not difficult.  It is what one would run out of first.  Suppose that my recipe for making a cheese sandwich is two slices of bread plus one slice of cheese makes a sandwich.  And suppose that I have six slices of bread and four slices of cheese.  What is the limiting reagent, and what is the theoretical yield of sandwiches?  I recommend writing this out formally.
