Soap making lab using the bases KOH and NaOH
« on: February 24, 2021, 07:05:08 PM »
I have a lab to do in my chemistry class. I want to compare and contrast by using KOH or NaOH in a separate saponification reactions with a triglyceride. Using a KOH base should make the soap more liqudy and an NaOH base should give you a hard, opaque soap to use. Should I use both bases that have the same mass and amount, or will that change my result?  I used a calculator to determine the mass (in grams) to use in the reaction. So for NaOH around 19g and KOH about 27g. If I would make both bases in separate reactions 23g for example. Will I get different results or will the results be the same (so both products turn out to be a solid soap)? Thank you in advance.
