Topic: How can you detect potassium hydroxide and copper (II) chloride?  (Read 1174 times)

How can you detect potassium hydroxide(KOH) and copper (II) chloride(CuCl)? How can you detect either one of them with as many as possible unique ways? like for example with acid base reactions, redox reations and precipitation reactions. I have a research task for school and for this research task i will get a test tube with either one of the two chemicals potassium hydroxide or copper(II) chloride. So far i have found out that by looking at the colour i can detect wich one it is. copper (II) chloride is blue and potassium hydroxide is white. I also have found a precipitation reaction. If i add sodium carbonate(NaCO3) the solution will either become clear or not clear. if its clear the chemical in the test tube will be potassium hydroxide if its not clear it is copper (II) chloride.

First read forum rules, what is your work you have done so far.
Second copper-II- chloride and potassium hydroxide can not exist together. It will react to which products.

Sorry for not reading the forums rules before hand. And copper (II) chloride and potassium hydroxide are two sepperate chemicals. I either have copper (II) chloride or potassium hydroxide in the test tube. I have changed my post hope its better now.

Check pH KOH is alcaline, copperchloride is acidic. The precipitation test is ok. Add a iron nail to the coppersolution, you get a deposit of copper to it. Chloride can be checked with silver nitrate.

I am glad to see that the precipitation test is ok. What exactly will happen if i add silver nitrate to Chloride? And is there a reason the iron nail will react with the coppersolution. I hope i do not bother you too much. But thanks for the help.

i know the solubility rules but i do not know the reactivity series.

AgCl has very low solubility and Fe has more oxidation potential or tendency to undergo oxidation then Cu .
I hope this line will help you to know what will happen.
